For those of you who are not familiar with
“Karenni”, we are one of the ethnic groups from a small country which is located in SouthEast
Asia called Burma (Myanmar). There are several ethnic groups in Burma, and we are all
different in culture and language.
Karenni state used to be an independent state during the British's colony in Burma. Karenni lost
independence in 1948 when the British left Burma/Myanmar. Burmese troops invaded Karenni
territory in 1948, and the Karenni people were persecuted and became refugees in Thailand. Due
to ongoing armed conflict between Karenni armed resistance groups and Burmese troops, the
Karenni refugees in Thailand were unable to return home and got the opportunity to resettle in
the U.S beginning 2009.
